How to Build Your Own DIY Eco-Friendly Cat Litter Box?

Build your own eco-friendly cat litter box with this fun DIY project that’s kind to your cat and the planet! ♻️🐾

Why Go DIY with a Litter Box?

  • Reduces litter waste and complements sustainable options like tofu or wood pellet litter.
  • Save money with simple supplies from your local store.
  • Quickly separates waste from clean litter.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 plastic storage bins (same size, stackable)
  • A drill or utility knife
  • Zip ties or plastic spacers
  • Marker or chalk
  • Sandpaper (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Sifting Bin

Use a marker to trace a grid of small holes (around ½ inch in diameter) on the bottom of one bin.Drill or carefully cut out the holes to create your sifter. Sand the edges for safety.

Step 2: Stack & Customize

Place the drilled bin inside the second intact bin.Optional: Add plastic spacers or zip ties at the corners to lift the inner bin slightly, allowing litter to fall through more easily.

Add Your Eco-Friendly Litter

Pour your favorite sustainable litter—like tofu litter, pine pellets, or paper-based pellets—into the top (sifting) bin.

Step 4: How It Works

  • When your cat uses the box, clumps stay on top.
  • Simply lift the inner bin and shake—clean litter falls through.
  • Dispose of the clumps, and reuse the litter below!

Benefits of a DIY Litter Box

  • Reduces waste of expensive eco-litter
  • Ideal for multi-cat homes
  • Zero electricity needed—just smart design!
  • Bonus Tip:Use baking soda or charcoal pads in the bottom bin for extra odor control!
